For our first class, we split into small groups and read Stepping Stones, the story of refugees escaping war and danger in Syria and Pakistan. Many of the students had traveled to the United States, and, though they were not escaping war, they could identify with some of the themes present in the book.
While we were excited to read with our new groups, we also loved getting to hear the children share their own experiences of coming to the United States, and we think we will be able to use some of this personal experience in the future!
Next week, we hope to allow students to create their own stone images, using paper and buttons. These images could illustrate their home or their journey to this country, and we can't wait to see what they come up with! We may also introduce a new book for some of our older students, who seem extremely interested in graphic novels. We can't wait to go back!
