Yesterday at Apollo we had our first regular RAPS meeting using the books! There was a very exciting energy in the room as students enthusiastically shared about their books. During our first meeting, students voted on their books of choice and then picked which one they wanted to read. The winners included: Counting By 7's by Holly Goldberg Sloan, Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger, and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. Each group worked on a different art project. Origami Yoda did not yet have a chance to make origami yet, but they did discuss who would lead it next week. Counting By 7's made sunflowers with seven petals, each petal representing a different piece of one's identity. We then filled the stems with the names of the people who "hold us up." figuratively speaking. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children created their own version of peculiar children. My favorite one was a child who reversed in age--so creative! Using art to connect with the book really helped readers engage and reflect with the various novels. We are looking forward to returning to RAPS after Fall break! Stay tuned!
