October 18 Meeting

We began our meeting on October 18 with a STEM challenge! Students used spaghetti, string, tape, and marshmallows to see who could create the tallest structure. Students used a variety of strategies to create their structures, and we were impressed with their creativity! This activity was inspired by this TED talk that investigated whether kindergartners or CEO's would be more successful with this challenge. You might be surprised by the answer!

Next, students watched their interviews and completed an activity inspired by Instagram. We then went outside to run around and have a snack. A huge thanks to Dominoes for donating pizza!

We ended the morning with independent reading and working on our comics in the computer lab. A great day was had by all!

October 4 Meeting

We had a great meeting last Saturday! We began by playing a fun bingo icebreaker. This was not your traditional bingo! Students had to find people who could do whatever the action was in the square and then get that person to sign in the square. An example of one of the actions was, "Create a secret handshake with someone and then 2 minutes later, come back, repeat it, and have them sign here." Here is a photo to give you an idea of some of the silly things we had to do!

Next, we did another scavenger hunt around campus since so many students had not been there the week before. It was great to get out and about on such a beautiful day. Also, our students really enjoyed getting a glimpse into what life is like for a college student at Vanderbilt.

After we had a snack, we came back inside and read and continued working on our comics using Bitstrips for Schools. We ended by starting our book talk series. The book presented was Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo.

We hope everyone has a wonderful fall break and we will see everyone back on October 18!

September 20 Meeting

We had an awesome meeting on September 20! We began by writing thank you notes to Vanderbilt Athletics for donating football tickets so that we could attend the game last weekend. Go ‘Dores!

We then went on a Vanderbilt scavenger hunt. We explored the entire Peabody Campus. Take a look at the form below to see all the fun things we found!

After that we had snacks and ran around outside. Once we were tired out, we headed back inside to read our books and work on our comics using Bitstrips for Schools. We are looking forward to our next meeting on October 3. We hope to see everyone then!
