November 16 Meeting

We had a fantastic meeting last Saturday. When we first arrived a reporter and photographer were there from the Vanderbilt News. Click here to read the story about our program. Click here to see all the photos that were taken on Saturday. We are so excited to share all that we've been doing with the Patterson RAPS program!

We read more from the book Scat by Carl Hiassen. Students then did various activities related to the book. We will finish Scat at our next meeting, and we all can't wait to find out what happened to Mrs. Starch in the Black Vine Swamp!

After we did activities with the book, we had a delicious snack provided by Fido. Please go by Fido if you get a chance and thank them for providing us with such yummy muffins! Fido will be providing cookies for snacks for our next meeting. Yum!

The Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science (VSVS) joined us on Saturday for a special science investigation that related to Scat. Students learned about chromatography by examining a letter written by one of the suspects in the story. A huge thanks to VSVS for taking the time to collaborate with us!

We look forward to seeing us for our last meeting of 2013 on December 7. Leave a comment and tell us what you think about Scat so far! Also, don't forget to bring your book and read to Chapter 20 before our last meeting!

November 2 Meeting and Upcoming Events

We can't believe it is November already! Patterson RAPS has gotten off to a great start this fall, and we have a lot of exciting things coming up!

We had a very productive meeting on Saturday, November 2. Dr. Pendergrass began our meeting by reading Scat by Carl Hiassen aloud. Scat is a mystery about a teacher that goes missing on a field trip. One student, named Smoke, is currently our prime suspect.

After listening to the book, the students broke off into small groups. Some students worked on writing their own mystery stories, some completed a "Mapping Out the Story" activity, some worked on mystery vocabulary words, and some students helped create a timeline of events in the book.

We only have two more meetings in 2013. Please don't miss the fun! We will have some special surprise science guests joining us on Saturday. We also have plans to collaborate with the Teach Twice program to create a student-made book. Finally, we will continue reading Scat. Stay tuned to find out "whodunnit!"
