September 21 Meeting

We had another awesome meeting last Saturday! We started out by reading I Funny by James Patterson in small groups. The students (and adults!) seem to really be enjoying the book so far.

We then did a writing activity with the book. Students wrote generalizations about different topics in the book, and then found quotes from the book to support their generalizations. We have a very thoughtful group of students!

After we read, we had a fabulous snack of donuts, donated by Dunkin Donuts. Yum! Please go support Dunkin Donuts to thank them for sponsoring our program! Following our snack, Gavin Smith, the Vanderbilt Marching Band Director, and members of the Vanderbilt Marching Band came to visit us. We learned about the different types of instruments, and they even gave the students a chance to try playing the instruments!

We are looking forward to another great meeting on Saturday, October 5. Students, don't forget to read to p. 199 in I Funny. Also, don't forget to bring your two jokes! Feel free to discuss the book or your jokes in the comments. We look forward to seeing everyone again soon!

September 14 Meeting

We had a fantastic meeting on Saturday morning! We read much more in the book I Funny by James Patterson. Students focused on characterization while reading. We watched this video that helped us understand a little more about the main character in the book, Jamie Grimm.

We also wrote Diamante Poetry. Students came up with some very original adjectives and verbs to describe themselves.

Next, we went around campus to complete a photo scavenger hunt. Students acted like statues, observed squirrels, and spelled out "VU" with their bodies, among other fun activities!

Finally, we want to give a big thanks to Taco Mamacita for donating chips and salsa for our snack. YUM! If you get a chance, go by there and support their business. We look forward to seeing everyone next Saturday, September 21 at 9:00am!

First Meeting

We had our first meeting on Saturday. It was great to finally meet all the students and their parents! We began by playing a game to get to know each other better. While listening to "Gotta Keep Reading."We thought it might be fun to change the lyrics to another song one week. Any suggestions?

After getting to know each other a little better, we read the first chapter of I Funny by James Patterson. It is an hilarious book about a kid named Jamie Grimm, who wants to be a stand-up comedian. We discussed we think is going to happen next in the book. Students broke into small groups, with each group being led by a Vanderbilt student.

We then had dinner, which was provided by Which Wich. Thank you Which Wich for supporting our program! It was delicious. After dinner, we headed over to the Vanderbilt vs. Austin Peay football game. We had a fun time cheering for Vanderbilt. Libby, one of the student volunteers showed us how to make the "VU" sign with our hands. Vanderbilt won by a landslide. After the game we walked to Eakin Elementary for snacks and drinks.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone again this Saturday, September 14, from 9-12am. We will continue reading I Funny. If you want, leave a comment to share a memory from last week or to share what you think is going to happen next in the book. Have a great week everyone!
